Salmon
Mark from The Northern Ireland Environment Agency, visited our Primary 5 and 6 and brought 100 salmon eggs to be taken care of.
Here is their plan to take care of the salmon eggs -
The eggs are orange in colour and we will keep them in a tank with gravel at the bottom. The tank is then placed in a fridge. This fridge keeps the water at a temperature between 8 and 10 degrees. Inside the tank there is a pump that puts air into the water and also filters out waste products.
What we need to do:
· Remove any dead eggs – we will know they have died if their colour changes from orange to creamy/white and dead eggs also form a mucus membrane. We will use a straw to remove any dead eggs.
· Remove the eggshell when the eggs hatch. We will use a net to remove the shells.
After about 2 weeks we hope the eggs will start to hatch. We will then release the salmon into the River Bann at Clady.
